Saffrondale District
The Yards are where Saffrondale stops posing and gets its work done.
Behind the better streets, the town opens into carriers' lanes, cart sheds, sawpits, stores, warehouses, and muddy ground that never quite dries. If the market is the performance of local wealth, the Yards are the labor that keeps it moving.
What people see
This is a district of rough timber, damp ropes, stacked barrels, wheel ruts, and men shouting to be heard over carts backing into sheds. Smoke hangs low when the weather turns. Mud keeps the shape of every boot and hoof. Business here is less polished, but often more urgent.
Carriers, warehouse hands, sawyers, teamsters, and jobbers meet in the same narrow spaces. Anybody with coin can try to hire help. Anybody with a grievance can find witnesses, if not justice.
How the district works
Heavy work naturally slides away from prestige streets. Loads need room to turn. Waste needs a place to go. Loud work belongs where respectable frontage cannot complain too loudly about it. That gives the Yards a looser reputation than the market, but not an empty one.
Back-lane bargains happen here because this is where people know what labor costs by the hour, what storage costs by the day, and what trouble costs if it reaches the wrong ears.
How players can use it
For players, the Yards offer practical routes into the town's rougher side without forcing a hidden-cabal answer onto every encounter. This is where you find handlers, carriers, casual work, secondhand tools, overheard disputes, and people who know what moved through town before sunrise.
It is also a strong place for pressure. Tempers are shorter, schedules matter more, and favors often come wrapped in someone else's problem.
Public rumor
People say the Yards have their own rough justice, though no two stories agree on who enforces it. Some claim whole deals can vanish into back sheds if the weather is bad and the witnesses are tired. Others say that is market gossip from people who prefer their dirt at a distance.
Whatever the truth, everyone agrees the Yards hear things early and repeat them badly.
